Example of the Economic Situation in Los Angeles County
There are currently all sorts of numbers being mentioned in public and the media: unemployment rate, the real unemployment rate, foreclosures, etc. Some are surprising, like a study showing homeless being down 30%! Sometimes it can be all a bit numbing; but, sometimes, a smaller, real example can be clarifying.
A parish in Los Angeles County hosts a weekly food program where recipients must be qualified by income and residency in order to qualify (these are documented). This program serviced 55 distinct recipients in July 2008 (i.e. 55 families or individuals received food packages during the month; some came once and some came every week ... but 55 different names are signed on the register). The number has increased ... in November 2009, there were 115 distinct recipients.

Social Services Holiday Season ... Would You Like to Help?
This year, the St. John the Baptist Social Services program will again be reaching out to those in need in the parish and community. In these stressful and challenging times, many hardworking people need whatever help can be provided. Would you like to help make this year a success?
For Thanksgiving: the annual food distribution to help those in need in Baldwin Park, we are asking people to generously donate one or more of the following items:- a box of stuffing- a bag of potatoes or a box of mashed potatoes - a can of yams- a can of cranberry sauce- a bag of bread or dinner rolls. If you would like to donate a turkey or help financially, please contact Social Services. (626) 337-4223
For Christmas: the program is seeking to help bring joy to hundreds of families during these challenging times, with a focus on families with children up to 10 years of age. You can bring a new toy (with a tag saying for what age and if for a boy or girl) to the church or the office. The families also receive food; so, contributions are most welcome. The gifts are to be given out at a Posada on December 23 as well as deliveries in the community.
Of course, any financial assistance is also tremendously appreciated. The goal for this season is $10,000, which will do an incredible amount of good. You can use the contact information at the top of the page.
The program also collects food and clothing to aid people throughout the year.

Position Available: Care for a Senior
This position is open. Please contact Social Services office if you are interested in contacting for the this opening.
We would like to get someone for the following situation in Pico Rivera. The ideal 'senora' for this situation is one with little or no obligations (to small children or husband) and who is in need of economic stability.
My sister and I are looking for a Spanish-speaking woman who knows how to cook homemade Mexican food, and preferibly, one who knows how to drive (although this is not a deal-breaker). We need this woman to take care of a 79 year old male (my father) and to stay at his house. This 'senora's responsibilities would be to maintain the house clean, cook, and if she drives, take him to his medical appointments, and do the grocery shopping for the week, plus make sure he takes his medications in the AM and PM. --she wouldn't pay for rent or food. ---she would receive a monthly stipend of around $800, and if she drives and has a car, maybe up to $1,000.--- she would have her own room and bathroom, and access to the rest of the house.--- she would have a some degree of flexibility since my father needs tending to only in the AM (up to 11 or so), then at 5 or 6 pm, in the evening. Several weekends would be made available for her so she can visit family members, etc.--- she does not have to bathe him or change him; he's still independent in this sense.
