Cardinal Speaks on Census

As millions across the nation begin receiving their census forms, a taped message from Cardinal Mahony will begin airing this week on El Sembrador TV & Radio and Guadalupe Radio calling on the Latinos to “be counted” in the 2010 Census.

“Your participation ensures that your community will receive funding for schools, hospitals and other services,” explains the Cardinal in Spanish on the 60 and 30-second spots. The Cardinal also reassures the immigrant community that the Census is confidential. In his message he explains that “it is against the law to share your answers with anyone, including social service agencies and immigration.”The Cardinal’s full video message in Spanish may be viewed at: content.la-archdiocese.org/wm/hagase-contar-2-web.wmv

The Latino community has traditionally been undercounted in the Census, due to apprehension and fear in immigrant communities about providing information to the federal government. The Archdiocese of Los Angeles is working with the Census Department and other community groups to alleviate concerns and educate the Latino community on the importance of the Census.

“We are faced with the reality that many in our immigrant communities are scared and may not understand that participating in the Census will benefit them, not harm them,” said Cardinal Mahony. “I am pleased to work with our Catholic stations and other partners to reach out our brothers and sisters in the Latino community so that they understand the importance of being counted.”

In addition to the Cardinal’s message, parishes throughout the Archdiocese have also volunteered to serve as “Questionnaire Assistance Centers” for the Census Bureau. The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels will serve as one of these centers beginning on Sunday, March 21 through Sunday April 18.
