Giving Tuesday

After Black Friday and Cyber Monday ....

Today, November 27, is #GivingTuesday, a new movement to celebrate giving and encourage more, better, and smarter giving during the holiday season. Today is the day to transform the way people think about, talk about, and participate in charitable giving. Today we can all find ways for our families, our communities, our companies, or our organizations to join in acts of giving and service.

Share what you are doing and why it matters. Join a national celebration of our nation's great tradition of generosity.

Catholic Campaign for Human Development

Yearly Collection at St. John the Baptist

Respecting the dignity of each and every human being is a fundamental belief in Catholicism. The Catholic Campaign for Human Development, a program funded by the U.S. Catholic Bishops, does just that by funding organizations whose members wish to lift themselves out of poverty. Each year, parishioners are asked to give to this collection, which has previously improved economic development, education systems, and housing situations. The CCHD Collection takes place the Sunday before Thanksgiving, November 18. Please help fight for poverty and give to the Catholic Campaign for Human Development Collection.

Thank You!

There will also be informational booths at St. John on both Sunday, November 11th, and Sunday, November 18th from about 9:00AM – 1:00pm.

Proposition 34 Training

Training Days for to promote passing Prop 34~~ September 15 and 22nd
************************************
Archbishop José Gomez and the Catholic Bishops of California have decided to promote passing Proposition 34 which is on the ballot in November.  Prop 34 is the initiative that will replace the death penalty in California with life in prison without the possibility of parole.  The bishops see this as an important moral and life issue.

In the Archdiocese of Los Angeles the Offices of Justice and Peace, Restorative Justice, and Respect Life are working together to promote life issues, and coordinate efforts to pass Prop 34.  Parishes are asked that RESPECT LIFE SUNDAY (October 7) be used to join in kicking off these efforts through homilies, bulletin and pulpit announcements, voter registration, voter education sessions, and similar efforts throughout October.

To prepare parishes to coordinate these efforts, we have organized several training sessions for two Saturdays this month in different locations to make it convenient for people.  We would like to ask for two people designated from each parish to be trained – please designate two representatives from your parish to attend (they are asked to attend only ONE of any of these sessions).

Farmworker Bill

http://www.ufw.org/images/takeaction_v.jpg
Farm worker heat safety bill to reach full senate floor Monday. Send your email asking your senator to support this bill today!
***************************************

It's hot outside. Last week the temperature in California's Central Valley went above 110 degrees. Can you imagine laboring in weather like that with the searing sun beating down on you for 8-10-12 hours a day? Not something you'd want to do, is it? Then try to imagine doing that hard work without water or shade. Unimaginable, right? Unfortunately, not for many farm workers.

Since California issued its 2005 regulations to keep farm workers from dying of extreme heat, preventable farm worker deaths have continued to occur at a similar pace. Just this summer, state regulators are investigating two possible heat-related farm worker deaths. The fact is that the state just doesn't have the resources to adequately enforce its heat standards. According to an August 22 editorial in the Desert Sun, "Last year only 1,090 heat inspections were conducted on California's 81,500 farms. At that rate, many violations could go unnoticed."
Since the state has failed to adequately enforce its heat standards, the UFW has sponsored two bills that will allow farm workers to protect themselves. One of these bills, AB 2676 (Calderon), Humane Treatment for Farm Workers Act, which says agricultural employers must treat farm workers at least as well as animals or face the same criminal penalties, has already passed the Senate floor and is on its way to the Assembly.
We expect the other bill, AB 2346 the Farm Worker Safety Act (Butler) to be on the full Senate floor next Monday. This bill would empower farm workers to enforce mandatory shade and drinking water requirements without any cost to taxpayers.
The problem of heat-related farm worker deaths must be solved. Farm workers cannot keep having their lives jeopardized. Could you please send your senator an email today asking them to support this bill?

USCIS Announcement

DHS Outlines Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Process

USCIS to begin accepting requests for consideration of deferred action on August 15, 2012

released Aug. 3, 2012

WASHINGTON—The Department of Homeland Security today provided additional information on the deferred action for childhood arrivals process during a national media call in preparation for the August 15 implementation date.

On June 15, Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano announced that certain young people who came to the United States as children and meet other key guidelines may be eligible, on a case-by-case basis, to receive deferred action. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is finalizing a process by which potentially eligible individuals may request consideration of deferred action for childhood arrivals.

USCIS expects to make all forms, instructions, and additional information relevant to the deferred action for childhood arrivals process available on August 15, 2012. USCIS will then immediately begin accepting requests for consideration of deferred action for childhood arrivals.

Information shared during today’s call includes the following highlights:

  • Requestors – those in removal proceedings, those with final orders, and those who have never been in removal proceedings – will be able to affirmatively request consideration of deferred action for childhood arrivals with USCIS.
  • Requestors will use a form developed for this specific purpose.
  • Requestors will mail their deferred action request together with an application for an employment authorization document and all applicable fees to the USCIS lockbox.
  • All requestors must provide biometrics and undergo background checks.
  • Fee waivers cannot be requested for the application for employment authorization and biometric collection. However, fee exemptions will be available in limited circumstances.
  • The four USCIS Service Centers will review requests.

Additional information regarding the Secretary’s June 15 announcement will be made available on www.uscis.gov on August 15, 2012. It is important to note that this process is not yet in effect and individuals who believe they meet the guidelines of this new process should not request consideration of deferred action before August 15, 2012. Requests submitted before August 15, 2012 will be rejected. Individuals who believe they are eligible should be aware of immigration scams. Unauthorized practitioners of immigration law may try to take advantage of you by charging a fee to submit forms to USCIS on your behalf. Visit www.uscis.gov/avoidscams for tips on filing forms, reporting scams and finding accredited legal services. Remember, the Wrong Help Can Hurt! An informational brochure and flyer are also available on www.uscis.gov.

For more information on USCIS and its processes, please visit www.uscis.gov or follow us on Twitter (@uscis), YouTube (/uscis) and the USCIS blog The Beacon.

No Immigration Session This Thursday

This week's immigration advice session by CHIRLA for Thursday is CANCELLED due to scheduling conflict.

Are You a "Dreamer"?

Following the news about the Dream Act and immigration?

If you feel you may qualify under President Obama's new immigration status policy, now is the time to gather documents like school records.

The government has not released the requirements yet; but, you can be prepared.

Right now there is no clear guidance on how to apply for deferred action.  The US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has promised to have an application process ready to go by August 15.

The thing to do right now is to gather documents that prove your identity, that you have lived here since June 15 of 2007 and that you have been in school.  When the application process is open you need to make sure that it is safe for you and your family to apply for deferred action.

CHIRLA is preparing a mailing to students but it will also have information posted on the  website at www.chirla.org  Check it out. It is constantly being updated  with the latest information.

"Deferred Action" Details

APPLY NOW FOR PRESIDENT OBAMA'S NEW IMMIGRATION

POLICY: "DEFERRED ACTION"

President Obama's new immigration "law" ... is actually only a “policy.” It coudl change depending on the results of  the November 2012 election. Go to the website at www.immigrationhelpla.com & click on “Helpful Info.”

WHEN TO ACT?

While no formal application is available yet, we know the basic outline of what will be necessary. Begin preparing for Deferred Action now

before there are possible changes. The law office will ensure you are among the first to apply when DHS

formalizes the application process in August.

WHICH BENEFITS WILL I RECEIVE?

You will receive employment authorization, a Social Security number, the right to apply for a drivers license and car insurance and the right

to live in the U.S. without fear of "deportation" for two years and possibly longer. Currently, this is not a path to a green card or citizenship

but this may change in the future, but...

ONE POTENTIAL PATH TO CITIZENSHIP

Because children 18 are not penalized for unlawful presence, if children under 18 years of age receive this deferred action benefit, they will

not have any "unlawful presence" problems. Therefore, if they go to college they can apply for an H-1B visa after graduation for "specialty

occupation" employment. From there, they may be eleigible for a green card and later citizenship. It is not an easy path; but, the lesson here is

that your B.A. will be worth something very important!!!

HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?

Depending on the way the rules are written, most immigration attorneys will charge from $1000-$2000 for the deferred ation application. To

celebrate this new law and to show commitment to the DREAMers a law office will process the first 100 applications under a special "family

and friends" discount for as low as $750-- and they will process the case from the comfort of your own home. While it is not known how much

the government will charge to file, you can be sure that you will only pay this low amount to the lawyers.

UFW on VAWA

The UFW Foundation Urges Immediate Action Against House Proposed Changes to Violence Against Women Act (VAWA)

Los Angeles, CA - May 15, 2012 - The UFW Foundation, a 501(c)3 organization, strongly condemns the attempts by many in the House of Representatives to strip confidentiality from immigrant victims of domestic violence and human trafficking in the U Visa adjudication process. As currently worded, H.R. 4970 would allow immigration officers to obtain testimony from abusers in reported cases of domestic violence if their victim is an immigrant. This endangers victims by effectively notifying abusers of the victim's intent to escape the violence by cooperating with law enforcement. The UFW Foundation regards the politicizing of protections for victims of domestic violence and human trafficking as extremely dangerous, and believes the passage of H.R. 4970 would result in a significant increase in injuries and deaths among immigrant victims of domestic violence.

Currently, victims of domestic violence, human trafficking, and certain other serious crimes that cooperate with law enforcement are eligible to apply for a non-immigrant "U Visa." The House proposal would fundamentally change the current U Visa by blocking all applicants from adjusting their status to that of permanent resident, and by allowing abusers to provide input into whether victims should be eligible for immigration relief.

Any attempt to provide abusers with additional tools with which to coerce, threaten, or manipulate their victims should be rejected by the community. Stewardship
