Catholic Advocacy Day

rst Annual Catholic Advocacy Day Brings Message of Life & Dignity to Capitol
Delegates Meet with Nearly Half of all Lawmakers or their Staff

Delegates from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and eight other arch/dioceses met with just under half of all of California’s Assembly and Senators or their staff during the inaugural Catholic Advocacy Day. A remarkable track record for a new procedure that focuses on building relationships, communicating with Catholic voters and holding elected officials accountable.

Delegates brought the life-giving and compassionate message of Catholic social teaching to elected officials as they explained the scope of the Catholic Legislative Network and began establishing long-term relationships. They advocated on the following issues. For background, see: http://www.cacatholic.org/index.php/take-action/advocacy-day.html

Oppose subsidizing abortion providers while cutting services for the elderly, blind and disabled.
Support AB 6 (Fuentes, D-Los Angeles) to simplify the application process for food stamps.
Support SB 9 Sentencing (Yee, D-San Francisco) which would allow for the review and re-sentencing of some youth who were sentenced to life without parole.
Support AB 130 & AB 131 (Cedillo, D-Los Angeles) Student Financial aid: eligibility: California Dream Act.

The power of establishing relationship with elected officials became apparent immediately when the delegations were able to point out the inherent contradiction of subsidizing well-heeled abortion providers while cutting services to the poor. Many lawmakers and their staff expressed surprise that Family PACT funding had been exempted from cuts that other health care providers endured.

Many officials also not only met personally with the delegations but took the time to examine the issues with them. Some were very candid. For instance, many said they would suffer at the polls if they voted to allow review of juvenile life without parole sentences or simpler registration for food stamps.

Some refused to disclose their position on bills or their staff simply did not know, often saying they would decide when the bill comes before them for a vote. To be fair, amendments can change the intent of a bill. But this response can also be a way to avoid taking an unpopular stand on an issue with a visiting delegation. Our interest is to know the lawmakers opinions or reservations about an issue so that we can speak to those issues.

This is why accountability is another goal of the new format.

In-district meetings will be a way to continue urging lawmakers to support the Network’s positions on each bill or to articulate why they do not. Nearly all of the elected officials agreed to further in-district meetings with Catholic Legislative Network members in the coming months.

The Archdiocese of Los Angeles social justice staff and the California Catholic Conference staff thank the delegates for their hard work during Advocacy Day, for their reports, and for their efforts in arranging the in-district meetings. Thanks are also due to lawmakers and their staff – many of whom were well prepared for the meetings and generous with their time.

The reports from delegates are available on here, where you can see the reports of other arch/dioceses as well. Contact the social action coordinator on each report for further information.

(NOTE: In the interest of accuracy, delegates were asked to confirm the positions of elected officials. Where confirmation has not been received (often due to missed connections) it has been noted on the report for each elected official. Nevertheless, the reported positions indicate the delegates’ perception of a lawmaker’s position on the day of the event.)
