Baldwin Park Police on ATM Skimming

In response to the increase of ATM Fraud/Skimming crimes committed in surrounding cities here is some information on how to protect your personal information.

Skimming is when criminals capture credit card information and personal identification numbers from the magnetic strip on the back side of your card, using a small device that fits into ATM card readers and pin pads.

This hi-tech equipment is equipped with pinhead-sized cameras along with Bluetooth technology that downloads information wirelessly. This information, once copied, can be used to withdraw money or make illegal purchases on your accounts.

In most cases, these devices or “skimmers” are installed on outdoor ATM’s or exposed point-of-sale machines such as gas station kiosks.
Skimmers are difficult to detect, credit cards are better protected against fraud than debit cards.

Police Department Workshop on Scams

The Baldwin Park Police Department invites you to attend a FREE community workshop on SCAMS

Join us on Thursday, February 17, 2011 @ 10:30am Julia McNeill Senior Center, 4100 Baldwin Park Blvd.

Currently the Distraction Scam seems to be the trend. This crime usually occurs during day time hours and is targeted toward elderly victims. Once the suspect gains the victim’s trust and confidence, the suspect is allowed inside and occupies the victim, while a second suspect then enters the residence and commits the theft. The victim is unaware their valuables have been stolen and ultimately both suspects leave the residence minutes apart.

The distraction scam is just one of the scams that will be covered in this workshop. Criminals have plenty to choose from;

Celebrating 2011 ... Safely

A message form the Baldwin Park Police Department

It’s that time of year again, December 31st, a day to remember the past and a day to celebrate the New Year to come. Wherever you may be celebrating New Year’s Eve, the Baldwin Park Police Department would like to encourage everyone to celebrate the holiday safely and responsibly.

What goes up will come down. A bullet fired in the air can climb up to two miles and when it comes down it can reach speeds of 300 to 700 feet per second. Researches report that a velocity of 200 feet per second is sufficient to penetrate a human skull.

Drunk driving is one of the biggest killers during the holiday season, for this reason there will be increased patrols and sobriety check points. Designate a driver before the celebration begins. Watch for erratic driving and report drunk drivers. Find a Tipsy Tow service in your area.

Stay alive, don’t drink and drive.
Shooting a gun into the air is a crime.
If a stray bullet should hit someone, individuals can be arrested and charged with a serious crime.
If you see someone fire a gun in the air, call 911.
Report drunk drivers, call 911.

Enjoy the holiday safely and responsibly!

Baldwin Park Police Services

The Baldwin Park Police Department is keeping up with the times. They have launched several new services that can be accessed through the City of Baldwin Park website; www.baldwinpark.com.

www.crimereports.com is a website that provides Baldwin Park residents timely and reliable information on criminal activity in their neighborhoods. Residents can search the database using their home address to see recent criminal and traffic activity which is updated every 6 hours. “Information is power,” Chief Hadsell added, “and we hope that giving the community this information will help them prevent crime in their neighborhoods.” This information is available 24 hours a day through the website www.crimereports.com or through the CrimeReports iPhone app.

Because everybody’s time is valuable, the Baldwin Park Police Department has launched an Online Police Reporting System that allows any victim to submit an online report immediately to the police department. The Online Police Reporting System can be accessed through the City of Baldwin Park’s website at www.baldwinpark.com.

Victims may report a crime online from the comfort of their own home if the incident is not an emergency situation, occurred in Baldwin Park, there are no known suspects, and it did not occur on a State Highway. Once all the criteria have been met a report can be made and submitted. In return, each report will be issued a police report number and victim will be contacted if further investigation is required. Victims can print a copy of their report for free once it has been submitted.

Another feature added by the Baldwin Park Police Department is the Online Traffic Collision Report Retrieval System. This new feature will allow victims and or insurance companies access to traffic collision reports and photos using the online system. Users can access the feature through the City of Baldwin Park’s website www.baldwinpark.com. A police report number is needed to obtain traffic collision information and photos. Information can be printed for a small fee of $20 per report and $10 per photo.

These new technologies will allow the Baldwin Park Police Department to operate more efficiently while providing enhanced customer service to the residents of Baldwin Park.
