Thanksgiving Drive
The Social Services Program is beginning the annual; Thanksgiving Food drive. Please use the bags with needed items listed distributed at Mass or the boxes at the exits to place food donations.
Every year St. John the Baptist Social Services Program hosts a Thanksgiving Day food drive to assist struggling people in the Baldwin Park area. This year the goal is to serve 120 families. This year the Baldwin Park School District is partnering with Social Services.
We are hoping the community will be able to assist the program in acquiring turkeys as part of the families’ baskets. The program is already working with parishioners and other groups to help make a package of potatoes, stuffing, yams, cranberries and rolls along with the turkey for each family.
You can read on the latest news for our community at http://sjbsocialservices.blogspot.com/
Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.

White House Statement on Immigration
Statement from the White House on Immigration:
President Obama is deeply committed to fixing our immigration laws and has been aggressively searching for partners in Congress who are willing to work with him to pass a new law. As he focuses on building a new 21st century immigration system that meets our nation’s economic and security needs, the President has a responsibility to enforce the existing laws in a smart and effective manner. This means making decisions that best focus the resources that Congress gives the Executive Branch to do this work. There are more than 10 million people who are in the U.S. illegally; it’s clear that we can’t deport such a large number. So the Administration has developed a strategy to make sure we use those resources in a way that puts public safety and national security first. If you were running a law enforcement agency anywhere in the world, you would target those who pose the greatest harm before those who do not. Our immigration enforcement work is focused the same way.
Under the President’s direction, for the first time ever the Department of Homeland Security has prioritized the removal of people who have been convicted of crimes in the United States. And they have succeeded; in 2010 DHS removed 79,000 more people who had been convicted of a crime compared to 2008. Today, they announced that they are strengthening their ability to target criminals even further by making sure they are not focusing our resources on deporting people who are low priorities for deportation. This includes individuals such as young people who were brought to this country as small children, and who know no other home. It also includes individuals such as military veterans and the spouses of active-duty military personnel. It makes no sense to spend our enforcement resources on these low-priority cases when they could be used with more impact on others, including individuals who have been convicted of serious crimes.
So DHS, along with the Department of Justice, will be reviewing the current deportation caseload to clear out low-priority cases on a case-by-case basis and make more room to deport people who have been convicted of crimes or pose a security risk. And they will take steps to keep low-priority cases out of the deportation pipeline in the first place. They will be applying common sense guidelines to make these decisions, like a person’s ties and contributions to the community, their family relationships and military service record. In the end, this means more immigration enforcement pressure where it counts the most, and less where it doesn’t – that’s the smartest way to follow the law while we stay focused on working with the Congress to fix it.

Walk to End Homelessness
The Emergency Food and Shelter Program has been fortunate to have the support of the United Way of Greater Los Angeles since our inception in 1983. We would like to ask you to help us in supporting the incredible work they are doing in ending homelessness. As many of you know, we have more people living on our streets than any other region in the country. United Way is committed to ending homelessness, and we know this is only possible through collaboration with community partners like you.
With that, we're pleased to share that registration for our 5th annual HomeWalk is now open! HomeWalk is United Way's 5K walk to raise awareness and funds to end homelessness, and it's the only walk of its kind in the country. We hope you will join us this year to be a part of this incredible movement. The 5K walk and run will take place on Saturday, November 19th at Exposition Park. During the past four years, HomeWalk has mobilized over 18,000 walkers, raised $1.7 million, and funded programs that have moved thousands of people into permanent housing. Registration is also free for anyone under 18 years of age.
If you have any questions about HomeWalk, please contact Melissa Chinchilla at 213-808-6233 or mchinchilla@unitedwayla.org. Thank you for your partnership in creating pathways out of poverty and ending homelessness in our communities for good.

Baldwin Park Police on ATM Skimming

In response to the increase of ATM Fraud/Skimming crimes committed in surrounding cities here is some information on how to protect your personal information.
Skimming is when criminals capture credit card information and personal identification numbers from the magnetic strip on the back side of your card, using a small device that fits into ATM card readers and pin pads.
This hi-tech equipment is equipped with pinhead-sized cameras along with Bluetooth technology that downloads information wirelessly. This information, once copied, can be used to withdraw money or make illegal purchases on your accounts.
In most cases, these devices or “skimmers” are installed on outdoor ATM’s or exposed point-of-sale machines such as gas station kiosks.
Skimmers are difficult to detect, credit cards are better protected against fraud than debit cards.

Catholic Advocacy Day
rst Annual Catholic Advocacy Day Brings Message of Life & Dignity to Capitol
Delegates Meet with Nearly Half of all Lawmakers or their Staff
Delegates from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and eight other arch/dioceses met with just under half of all of California’s Assembly and Senators or their staff during the inaugural Catholic Advocacy Day. A remarkable track record for a new procedure that focuses on building relationships, communicating with Catholic voters and holding elected officials accountable.
Delegates brought the life-giving and compassionate message of Catholic social teaching to elected officials as they explained the scope of the Catholic Legislative Network and began establishing long-term relationships. They advocated on the following issues. For background, see: http://www.cacatholic.org/index.php/take-action/advocacy-day.html
Oppose subsidizing abortion providers while cutting services for the elderly, blind and disabled.
Support AB 6 (Fuentes, D-Los Angeles) to simplify the application process for food stamps.
Support SB 9 Sentencing (Yee, D-San Francisco) which would allow for the review and re-sentencing of some youth who were sentenced to life without parole.
Support AB 130 & AB 131 (Cedillo, D-Los Angeles) Student Financial aid: eligibility: California Dream Act.
The power of establishing relationship with elected officials became apparent immediately when the delegations were able to point out the inherent contradiction of subsidizing well-heeled abortion providers while cutting services to the poor. Many lawmakers and their staff expressed surprise that Family PACT funding had been exempted from cuts that other health care providers endured.
Many officials also not only met personally with the delegations but took the time to examine the issues with them. Some were very candid. For instance, many said they would suffer at the polls if they voted to allow review of juvenile life without parole sentences or simpler registration for food stamps.
Some refused to disclose their position on bills or their staff simply did not know, often saying they would decide when the bill comes before them for a vote. To be fair, amendments can change the intent of a bill. But this response can also be a way to avoid taking an unpopular stand on an issue with a visiting delegation. Our interest is to know the lawmakers opinions or reservations about an issue so that we can speak to those issues.
This is why accountability is another goal of the new format.
In-district meetings will be a way to continue urging lawmakers to support the Network’s positions on each bill or to articulate why they do not. Nearly all of the elected officials agreed to further in-district meetings with Catholic Legislative Network members in the coming months.
The Archdiocese of Los Angeles social justice staff and the California Catholic Conference staff thank the delegates for their hard work during Advocacy Day, for their reports, and for their efforts in arranging the in-district meetings. Thanks are also due to lawmakers and their staff – many of whom were well prepared for the meetings and generous with their time.
The reports from delegates are available on here, where you can see the reports of other arch/dioceses as well. Contact the social action coordinator on each report for further information.
(NOTE: In the interest of accuracy, delegates were asked to confirm the positions of elected officials. Where confirmation has not been received (often due to missed connections) it has been noted on the report for each elected official. Nevertheless, the reported positions indicate the delegates’ perception of a lawmaker’s position on the day of the event.)

The Baldwin Park Police Department invites you to attend a FREE community workshop on SCAMS
Join us on Thursday, February 17, 2011 @ 10:30am Julia McNeill Senior Center, 4100 Baldwin Park Blvd.
Currently the Distraction Scam seems to be the trend. This crime usually occurs during day time hours and is targeted toward elderly victims. Once the suspect gains the victim’s trust and confidence, the suspect is allowed inside and occupies the victim, while a second suspect then enters the residence and commits the theft. The victim is unaware their valuables have been stolen and ultimately both suspects leave the residence minutes apart.
The distraction scam is just one of the scams that will be covered in this workshop. Criminals have plenty to choose from;
